THE ARTIST
About Neil
A self‑taught painter on the shores of Loch Ness
I first took up painting in 1989 and began teaching myself while living in Shetland. I initially practised with watercolours, focusing mainly on landscapes, but once I discovered oils, I never looked back. I found oils much more versatile, allowing me the freedom to revisit and refine my work as they take longer to dry. As my confidence grew, I wanted to move beyond traditional landscapes and began exploring my imagination, creating imaginary and surreal scenes that reflected my own unique vision. This led me to experiment with different styles and subjects, many of which can be seen throughout my collection of work today.
Painting has always been deeply therapeutic for me. It allows me to step away from the demands of everyday life and become completely absorbed in the creative process. As an ex-construction worker who worked both onshore and offshore, painting became a valuable outlet between contracts, helping me stay busy while providing a sense of purpose and enjoyment. Over the years, I have enjoyed watching my style evolve and develop, with each painting contributing to my growth as an artist. \
I am also a keen hiker, and much of my inspiration comes from the breathtaking scenery of Scotland, as well as the landscapes and cultures I have encountered during my travels around the world. For more than a decade, I have lived in a wee village on the shores of Loch Ness, where the ever-changing light, water, and surrounding hills continue to provide endless inspiration for my work. Now, more than 35 years later, I am still painting, still learning, and still loving every moment of the creative journey. Each new painting is an opportunity to create something different, challenge myself, and bring an idea to life. After all these years, that sense of excitement has never faded. Below, you can see my very first painting alongside one of my most recent works—a reminder of the journey, growth, and enjoyment that painting has brought me over the years. I hope you enjoy viewing my work.
